I want to start my “New Year New You” commitment by redefining beauty. Let’s face it……beauty is complex. There is so much more to beauty then just appearance. It is so much deeper. Beauty is a reflection of who we are….it begins in our hearts and in our souls and is reflected outwardly. I believe that we intrinsically know this to be true, but all too often we get caught up in what others’ definition of beauty is. The outside world — particularly the media — presents beauty in very simplistic terms. To our society at large, beauty is all about the physical. Physical attractiveness in our culture is very limited, especially for women. All you have to do is open any magazine, or turn on the television. With few exceptions, women who are presented as beautiful are thin, tall, have relatively perfect facial symmetry, and have spectacular bodies….which usually includes long legs and/or large (or perfect) breasts. A very small number of women actually meet these standards naturally. It’s no wonder many of us often feel less than ideal.
Ultimately, I believe it is up to each and every one of us to determine our own beauty and value. Many of us never take the time to consider how and why we value ourselves; we base our self-esteem entirely on outside opinions. If we don’t meet the measure of beauty presented to us in the media, we must not be beautiful. So…..I want you to try something. I want you to begin every day by telling yourself that you are beautiful. Challenge yourself to consider your own beauty in new ways. Make “beauty” synonymous with “kindness” or “strength”. Find one thing about yourself each and every day that is beautiful….whether it’s your kindness or your strength…..your smile or your laugh….find one thing. This will help you to appreciate who you are and what you have to give. And, it will help you appreciate your fabulous, beautiful self. Always remember, you are the most beautiful version of you.
